More Than a Game

As the Barneveld School District continues to implement the DPIs Comprehensive School Mental Health System, we were able to partake in various trainings this week. The trainings were for staff, students, and peer leader advisors. Barneveld has adopted the Sources of Strength Curriculum and has been able to implement it from mental health grants. Sources of Strength is a best-practice youth mental health promotion program designed to harness the power of peer social networks to create healthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse. The mission of Sources of Strength is to prevent adverse outcomes by increasing well-being, help-seeking, resiliency, healthy coping, and belonging. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing an upstream approach for mental health. This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support, or protective factors, for young people so that when times get hard, they have strengths to rely on. Thank you to all who participated.

Recently, the Barneveld Middle School students were able to present a check for $1786.50 to the Barneveld Food Pantry. These funds were raised as a result of the annual Middle School Carnival. This is a day filled with carnival games for the elementary students to attend, a bake sale with homemade goods made by the middle school students, and a thrift sale of donated items. During the presentation, Dave spoke about gratitude and service to our community. These are attributes we continue to model and teach for our students. Thank you students for a job well done!

Thank you to the Dodgeville School District, Ms. Hanke, and Mrs. Anderson for the opportunity you provided our Spanish 1 students this semester. With no high school Spanish teacher to start the year, Dodgeville agreed to a collaboration. Ms. Hanke joined our students each day, virtually, to teach them Spanish. Mrs. Anderson was in the classroom supporting the lesson. Our students were engaged, cooperative, and successful. Ms. Hanke surprised them on the last day and joined the class in person. Thank you everyone for providing this opportunity for the students in Barneveld.
